What Happens When You Get Here
You're already in the right headspace for outdoor adventure. Gatlinburg has a way of doing that. The river is just a different kind of it. Wetter. Louder. Harder to forget.
The Pigeon River runs through the Pigeon River Gorge in Cherokee National Forest, and it's Tennessee's most popular whitewater destination for good reason. Walters Dam controls the flow upstream, which means guaranteed release days and predictable water levels regardless of rainfall. When the weather turns weird, most rivers become a coin flip. The Pigeon doesn't.
Whether you're looking for Class III rapids, a relaxed family float, or a full day on the water, all three trips leave from our outpost in Hartford. Every age. Every ability. All summer long.
Check In at the Outpost
Our outpost sits right on the river banks, a new facility with clean bathrooms, changing rooms, an air-conditioned office, and a photo station where you can view shots of your group taken on the water (available for purchase on a USB drive).
Safety Briefing Before You Launch
Your guide walks you through a thorough safety briefing before you're ever on the water. Straightforward, confidence-building, and designed to make the whole process feel clear. Our guides average 10+ years on the Pigeon River. They know every rapid by name.
On the Water
Each raft holds 6–8 guests plus your guide. Larger groups travel in multiple boats, with guides coordinating on the water so no one gets separated. Upper trip guests shuttle up to the put-in; Lower Float guests shuttle back from the take-out.

Questions About Rafting Near Gatlinburg
Where is the closest whitewater rafting to Gatlinburg?
The closest whitewater rafting to Gatlinburg is on the Pigeon River in Hartford, TN, about 45 minutes away via I-40 West (Exit 447). Note that the Little Pigeon River flows through downtown Gatlinburg itself, but it isn't used for rafting. The Pigeon River Gorge, where rafting happens, is a separate stretch of the river east of town in Cherokee National Forest. Hartford is a small community right at the gorge, home to several rafting outfitters including Big Creek Expeditions. The drive is easy, scenic, and worth making.
Where is the best place to whitewater raft in Tennessee?
The Pigeon River in Hartford, TN is Tennessee's most popular whitewater destination. Tennessee's other well-known rafting river is the Ocoee, about two hours south of Gatlinburg. It was the site of the 1996 Olympic canoe/kayak events and is genuinely excellent whitewater. But the Ocoee is rainfall-dependent, which means flows can be unpredictable, and it's a significantly longer drive from the Smokies. The Pigeon River is 45 minutes from Gatlinburg, controlled by Walters Dam for reliable scheduled releases, and offers three trip options ranging from Class I–II floats for families to Class III whitewater, making it the right choice for most visitors in the region.
Can we combine rafting with other activities on the same trip?
Easily. The Upper trip runs about 2–2.5 hours total; the Lower Float is 2.5–3 hours, which leaves plenty of room on either side. If you're already planning a day in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the river fits naturally: Hartford is just 45 minutes from the Sugarlands Visitor Center, and a lot of guests pair a morning hike on Alum Cave Trail or Laurel Falls with an afternoon on the water. Big Creek also books zipline tours at Legacy Mountain in Pigeon Forge and horseback riding at Five Oaks in Sevierville through partner outfitters. Some guests do rafting in the morning and a zipline in the afternoon. Call us and we'll help you put it together: 877-642-7238.
What month is best for white water rafting on the Pigeon River?
The Upper Pigeon runs March through September, with peak season from May through September. June, July, and August offer the most guaranteed release days from Walters Dam: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Spring (March–May) tends to bring stronger flows and cooler water temperatures. For families with younger kids doing the Lower Float, the season runs through October. Honestly, if the dam is releasing, any day is a good day on the river.
Do I need rafting experience?
Not a bit. If you've hiked a trail in the Smokies, you've already done something harder than most people expect rafting to be. Your guide handles navigation. You paddle when they say paddle and hold on when they say hold on. The safety briefing before your trip is calm and thorough, and your guide has seen every level of nervous. Most guests are first-timers. Most come back.
What if I can't swim?
Non-swimmers raft with us all the time. Every guest wears a Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device (PFD) for the entire trip, and your guide is trained in swift water rescue with current CPR and First Aid certification. Not being a swimmer has never stopped anyone from having a great time on the Pigeon River. What matters is that you listen to your guide. They're very good at making that easy.
